New Homes Bonus Consultation on Local Housing Stock

The government published its New Homes Bonus consultation on Friday 12th November, which is aimed at offering incentives to councils to increase their housing stock.

Steve Turner, head of communication at the Home Builders Federation, said that the proposal is a positive step in addressing the current pressures on property supplies.

Mr Turner said: "Local authorities have seen their budgets cut in the spending review, and this will provide them with a way of generating income and providing the homes that they need. We welcome this, and we now hope that local authorities will buy into the new system."

Earlier this year, the Federation of Master Builders said that extra money from the government for councils in England for new housing would be a welcome boost, but that local authorities must deliver the properties needed to tackle the shortage of available housing.

North West London Gets their Regeneration Project!

After almost ten years of negotiations Planning has been granted for the £45bn regeneration project in North West London. The area borders north at the Brent Cross Shopping Centre, east and west boarders spanning from the A41 Hendon Way to the A5 Edgware Road and South to Cricklewood Lane.

The vision is to take on one of the biggest regeneration projects in London to improve its North West towns. The scheme will see more than £515m of the investment spent on committing to the section 106 such as transport in the area including developing a new midland mainline station in order to deal with the increase of people travelling to and from the area.

Another £200m to improve the local roads - £50m of this being spent soley on developing Staples Corner to improve the flow of traffic - and getting you home quicker! There will also be £109m spent on improvements to schools and healthcare institutes.

The move will create new housing – "7500 high quality homes, including significant numbers of new affordable homes and a wide range of unit sizes so local people can stay close to their families." There will also be 27,000 jobs created throughout and after the project.

Private Landlords Dispute Welfare Reform Minister Claims

Welfare reform minister Lord Freud has been accused of "fiddling government figures" in order to suggest that private landlords are largely behind an increase in the cost of housing benefit.

The British Property Federation has suggested that this is not the case and that other factors, such as government plans for social housing and an increasing number of unemployed people, have led to the increase.

Ian Fletcher, director of policy at the British Property Federation, suggested that while it supports benefit reform, it does not believe statistics should be manipulated.

Instead, property incentives should be in place to ensure that people can be kept in homes, he suggested.

"Rather than distorting the findings of the report and misusing statistics the Department [for Work and Pensions] should be focusing its energies on how it can work with the sector to keep people in their homes," Mr Fletcher said.

Late last month, the federation welcomed the latest findings from the Office of National Statistics which revealed growth in the construction sector.
