West Hampstead Speed Limiting
New figures show that there have been 39 accidents on West End Lane over the past three years, four of which resulted in serious injuries.
As well as reducing the speed from 30 to 20mph, the Town Hall plans to make substantial changes to the architecture of the road to further calm the traffic.
The pavement near the junction with Inglewood Lane would be widened to create more space for pedestrians and a narrower road for cars.
In response to complaints by residents that drivers did not wait for pedestrians to fully cross the road before continuing, the Fawley Road zebra crossing will be split into two by a new pedestrian island.
Meanwhile an island will be removed at Lymington Road and the pavement will be built out further to reduce the long crossing distance.
The busy thoroughfare is expected to become even more congested when station improvements at the West Hampstead Thameslink are finished in December.
If the planned works go through they will be carried out between November this year and March 2012.

The Affordable Art Fair is coming to Hampstead Heath

Thameslink Calls On The Local Talent In West Hampstead
In December this year, Network Rail will unveil the new West Hampstead Thameslink station on Iverson Road and West End Lane. West Hampstead Thameslink station is one of several stations which are being transformed as part of the Programme.
Blackfriars, Farringdon and London Bridge stations are all being upgraded too.
When the new station is unveiled in December, it will link to a new footbridge which will be fitted with lifts, making the station step-free for the first time in its history.
To celebrate the launch of the new station, Network Rail is running a photography competition. Winning photographs will be part of the grand opening and reproduced to be displayed at the station for all to see. Budding photographers and professionals alike have the chance to display their talents on the wall which runs along Iverson Road. The theme for the competition is 'connections', to represent the improvement of the interchange between Thameslink, the underground and the overground stations in West Hampstead.
Winners' photographs will be seen by everyone that goes to and through the station, so it's a great opportunity to show off your skills! There are two categories, one for children under 16 and an open category for everyone else. To enter, fill in their entry form and follow the instructions.

West Hampstead Residents Fight Developments
Plans have been laid for up to 10 residents’ associations to unite and use new powers to oppose high-rise developments which could see thousands of new homes built in the area.
The vice-chairman of the Fordwych Residents Association, James Earl, who is spearheading the campaign, said that Camden Council had no overarching vision for West Hampstead and Fortune Green and its character could be irreversibly damaged.
He also claimed that schools, transport facilities and doctors’ surgeries would struggle to cater for the newcomers.
Mr Earl has suggested that residents’ groups come together in a new neighbourhood forum and use powers set out in the Localism Bill, which is being debated in parliament, to protect green spaces and the areas’s character.
He said: “West Hampstead has that village feel with green space, but people still feel it is quite congested. If all these plans go ahead, we will be short of school places and doctors’ surgeries.
“It’s not the place for a high-rise development area. This kind of thing would never be proposed in Hampstead Village.

Enfield Council Launch Petition to Ban Spitting
Enfield Council has written to Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke for clearance to introduce the rules.The council says spitting in the street is both anti-social and a health hazard.
Councillor Chris Bond said: "We need to have a petition to show the government the strength of feeling - it sounds barmy but that's the law."The authority needs more than 2,750 signatures from residents to take its scheme forward.
Councillor Bond continued: "In the meantime we have launched a poster campaign urging people not to spit in our borough."It's a disgusting, anti-social habit which can spread germs."
It is likely any fines will be enforced by litter wardens.

As well as all of the above there are activities for children up to the age of 8 on most days of the week. Every Thursday between 11am and 11.30am and then again between 2pm and 2.30pm, you can bring your 0-18 month old baby to Baby Bounce where they can listen to rhymes and songs. On a Friday, West Hampstead library gears itself to entertain children between the ages of 2 and 7. From 10.30am 2-4 year olds can listen to stories and rhymes, and then at 4.15pm stories are read for 5 to 7 year olds.
If your children prefer to get their hands dirty, the Children's Craft Activity Hour on Tuesdays between 4pm and 5pm is the time for children ages 3-8. Younger children are also welcome with supervision from parents or guardians. You can call into the Library to see the children's art work brightening up the walls of the library and best of all, the activities above are completely free!
Residents can gain membership to West Hampstead library easily: all you have to do is bring proof of your name and current address. Children under the age of 18 also need to bring along a signature from a parent or guardian.
The opening hours for West Hampstead library are Monday and Tuesday 10am-7pm, Wednesday Closed, Thursday 10am-8pm, Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 11am-4pm.

London Councils Short-Term Lets Policies 'need review before Olympics'
According to the BBC, the National Association of Estate Agents has called for a review of legislation regarding short-term lettings, as homeowners could be in breach of the law if they allow rent-paying tenants to stay for less than a set period of time.
However, different London councils have separate rules on short-term lets, with Haringey in the north of the city telling the broadcaster that it will not be cracking down on property owners renting out their homes during the Games.
Westminster council, in contrast, does not usually allow residents to charge people rent if they are staying in the home for 90 days or less as it wants to improve the market for longer-term tenants and property buyers.
Rosemarie MacQueen, head of city planning development and design at Westminster, told the BBC: "In Westminster, we have a population of 250,000 and that has to grow with targets from the mayor and ourselves.
"If we have short term lets, we'll never increase our long-term residential population."She explained that many people who live in blocks of flats with short-term lets have a problem with the temporary residents, as they feel their quality of life is compromised.
"There's a fear of crime, they don't know the faces of the people who are coming in and a lot of short-term residents don't treat the place like home."They leave litter in the corridors, come and go and have parties," Ms MacQueen added.
So those with property to rent in Hampstead, London, would do well to check with their local authority about the legality of installing short-term tenants for the duration of the Olympic events, as otherwise they could end up with a £20,000 fine and a criminal record.
